Are Innovative Plastics Swing Joints Compatible with Rain Bird?

Innovative Plastics swing joint assemblies and ½" swing pipe are dimensionally compatible with the Rain Bird SA series and SPX-FLEX / SWGP swing pipe.

By Innovative Plastics Manufacturing

If you maintain an irrigation system built around Rain Bird hardware, a common question is whether Innovative Plastics swing joints and swing pipe will fit. The short answer: yes — by dimension. Our swing joint assemblies and swing pipe coil are built to the same standard funny-pipe sizing the industry shares, so they connect to the same fittings and slot into systems already laid out on the Rain Bird SA-series pattern.

What “compatible” means here

It is worth being precise. When we say our parts are compatible with Rain Bird, we mean dimensional and connection compatibility — the outside diameter, inside diameter, and funny-pipe insert sizing match the standard the industry uses. We do not mean the parts are made by, licensed by, or branded as Rain Bird. They are an independent Innovative Plastics product that happens to share the same nominal dimensions, so it fits the same way and works alongside the same fittings.

That distinction matters in the field. It means you can mix and match insert fittings, swing pipe, and street ells across the assembly without worrying about a proprietary connection — the parts speak the same dimensional language.

Swing joint assemblies vs. Rain Bird SA-series

Innovative Plastics pre-assembled swing joint assemblies are dimensionally compatible with the Rain Bird SA series (including SA5, SA65, and SA125050) and use standard ½” and ¾” funny-pipe connections. Drop one in where an SA-series swing joint would go and the connections line up.

Each assembly combines three proven materials:

  • LDPE swing pipe (funny pipe) — the flexible run that absorbs impact and lets you set the head flush to grade. New to it? See what is funny pipe.
  • Celcon M90 funny-pipe fittings — the barbed insert connectors that grip the swing pipe.
  • Marlex HDPE street ells — self-lubricating elbows that thread smoothly and let the head pivot.

Assemblies are offered in 6” and 12” tubing lengths and in 1-ell or 3-ell configurations, so you can match the amount of articulation to the job.

Swing pipe compatibility (SPX-FLEX / SWGP)

The same dimensional logic applies to bulk pipe. Our ½” swing pipe measures .690” OD × .490” ID and ships as a 100 ft coil. Those are the same nominal dimensions as Rain Bird SPX-FLEX-100 and SWGP100 swing pipe — which is exactly why it works with the same insert fittings.

In practice that means you can use our swing pipe coil as a drop-in spool for repairs and new runs on a system already built with SPX-FLEX or SWGP, without changing fittings or learning a new connection.

Choosing a configuration

A few quick rules of thumb:

  • Length: pick 6” for tight, shallow installs and 12” when you want more reach or a gentler bend from the lateral line up to the head.
  • Ell count: a 1-ell assembly handles a straightforward head; a 3-ell assembly gives more positioning freedom on uneven grades and awkward trench geometry.
  • Size: match ½” or ¾” funny-pipe connections to your lateral line and sprinkler head.

Compatibility and trademark note

Compatibility here refers to dimensional and connection compatibility using standard funny-pipe insert sizing — not that any part is made by, licensed by, or sold by Rain Bird. Innovative Plastics Manufacturing is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by Rain Bird. Rain Bird and product codes such as SA5, SA65, SA125050, SPX-FLEX, and SWGP are trademarks of their respective owner and are referenced here only to describe dimensional compatibility; no affiliation is implied.

Frequently asked questions

Are Innovative Plastics swing joints made by Rain Bird?
No. Innovative Plastics swing joints are manufactured by Innovative Plastics Manufacturing, not by Rain Bird. They are dimensionally compatible with the Rain Bird SA series and use standard ½" and ¾" funny-pipe connections, so they fit the same way — but they are an independent product, not a licensed or branded Rain Bird part.
Does Innovative Plastics swing pipe work with Rain Bird insert fittings?
Yes. Our ½" swing pipe measures .690" OD × .490" ID — the same nominal dimensions as Rain Bird SPX-FLEX-100 and SWGP100 swing pipe — so it accepts the same funny-pipe insert fittings.
What sizes and configurations are available?
Pre-assembled swing joint assemblies come in 6" and 12" tubing lengths and in 1-ell or 3-ell configurations, using standard ½" and ¾" funny-pipe connections.
