What Is Funny Pipe (Swing Pipe)?

Funny pipe — also called swing pipe — is flexible low-density polyethylene (LDPE) tubing used to connect a sprinkler head to the lateral line of an irrigation system. Unlike a rigid nipple, it bends at sharp angles without restricting flow, which lets you route around obstacles, position heads precisely, and absorb the impact of mowers and foot traffic that would otherwise crack a hard fitting.

Funny pipe, swing pipe — same thing

If you have heard the product called both names, you have not missed anything: “funny pipe” is simply the industry nickname for swing-pipe tubing. Both terms describe the same flexible LDPE pipe that ties a sprinkler head into the lateral line. Some catalogs and installers favor one term over the other, but they are interchangeable.

What it’s used for

The whole point of funny pipe is flexibility. Because it bends through tight angles without restricting flow, it solves three problems at once:

• Route around obstacles. Snake the pipe past roots, rocks, hardscape, or another line instead of forcing a rigid path.
• Position heads precisely. Flex the pipe to set the sprinkler head exactly flush to grade and at the right angle, even over uneven trenching.
• Absorb impact. When a mower deck, a boot, or a tire catches the head, the pipe flexes instead of snapping — protecting the rigid nipple and the fitting where it meets the lateral line.

That flex is also why funny pipe is the flexible core of every swing joint. A swing joint is just a short, bendable link built around a length of this tubing, and the pipe is what gives the assembly its give.

• Outside diameter (OD): .690”
• Inside diameter (ID): .490”

It is dimensionally compatible with common funny-pipe fittings and Marlex HDPE street ells, and it matches Rain Bird SPX-FLEX-100 / SWGP100 swing pipe, so it drops into systems already built around those parts.
