Temporary Plugs

A temporary conduit plug is a snap-in low-density polyethylene (LDPE) seal that protects exposed conduit and innerduct from weather, debris, and animal intrusion. Innovative Plastics’ polyethylene plug is purpose-built to protect standard ducts, inner-ducts, or terminators from the costly impacts of harsh weather conditions, on-site debris, and animal intrusion. Its tapered, ribbed side walls make installation quick and secure: push the plug into the duct mouth and the scalloped ridges form a snap-in seal that resists accidental dislodging from wind, water flow, or backfill pressure. A robust flanged lip at the base gives crews a clean grip for easy plug removal when the duct is ready to be put into service, so the same plug can often be pulled, set aside, and reused on the next job. Every polyethylene plug also features a built-in rope-tie — a molded tie-off point that makes it simple to attach mule tape or other pull-line, ensuring quick and convenient access whenever future needs arise.

Each plug is molded from Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE), a semi-pliable, high-impact, and chemically inert material characterized by extremely low moisture absorption. That semi-pliable nature lets the plug flex slightly to grip out-of-round or scuffed duct ends without cracking, and the material returns to shape rather than taking a permanent set in the cold. LDPE resists ultraviolet (UV) light, withstands ozone exposure, and endures wide temperature fluctuations, so a plug left exposed at a stubbed-up riser through a season of sun and frost will not become brittle or chalky. Its chemical inertness and low moisture absorption mean the plug will not swell, corrode, or wick water into the duct, making it ideally suited for demanding underground or outdoor environments. These properties work together to provide a durable, long-lasting solution that reliably seals and safeguards your ducting infrastructure.

In the field these plugs cap conduit and duct across underground electrical, broadband, and fiber work — sealing empty primary conduit at handholes, vaults, and pad-mounted equipment, and protecting the smaller-diameter innerduct that carries fiber. Because innerduct runs inside a larger host conduit, sizing matters: order to the inner-duct’s own trade size, not the host conduit, so the plug seats on the duct it is actually protecting. Twelve trade sizes span 1” (25 mm) through 8” (200 mm), covering everything from a single fiber inner-duct to large primary electrical conduit, and the built-in tie keeps a pull-line staged for the day the line is finally placed. They keep dirt, gravel, insects, rodents, and standing water out of open duct during construction, and they hold that seal through the months a run may sit dormant before cable is pulled.
