A conduit cap is a small part with an outsized job: it closes off an open duct so water, dirt, and debris stay out until cable is pulled. On an underground electrical or broadband project, an unsealed conduit invites mud, silt, and groundwater into the duct — fouling the path long before anyone runs a cable. Choosing the right cap comes down to two things: the conduit type and the trade size. This guide explains how Schedule 40, Schedule 80, EB, and DB conduit relate to one another, and how to pick a cap that fits.

What a conduit cap does

A PVC conduit cap pushes onto the end of a conduit and seals the opening. The caps from Innovative Plastics are designed to be practical in the field:

Schedule 40 vs. Schedule 80: it’s about wall thickness

“Schedule” refers to the wall thickness of the conduit. For a given trade size, Schedule 80 conduit has a thicker wall than Schedule 40, which gives it a higher pressure and impact rating — useful where conduit is exposed to physical damage or stubs up out of the ground.

Here is the part that matters for caps: a thicker wall means a smaller inside diameter, but the outside diameter stays the same for a given trade size. Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 of the same trade size share the same outside dimension; only the bore changes.

Because a cap slips over the conduit and seals against its outside diameter, a cap sized to a trade size fits both Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 of that size. You do not need a separate cap for each schedule — you size by trade size and the cap covers both.

What EB and DB conduit are

Two more conduit types show up constantly on underground jobs:

  • EB — encased burial. Conduit engineered to be surrounded by concrete in a duct bank. The concrete carries the structural load, so EB conduit can use a relatively economical wall.
  • DB — direct burial. Conduit engineered to be buried directly in the earth without a concrete envelope, so it is built to handle backfill and soil loads on its own.

Both are common on utility, municipal, and data-center work, and both leave open duct ends that need to be capped until the pull is made.

Two styles to choose from

There are two cap styles, and the choice depends on what happens after the duct is sealed:

  • PVC end caps — the plain style. A clean push-on cap that closes the conduit opening, offered in trade sizes ½” through 6”. This is the right choice wherever you simply need to keep the duct sealed against water and debris.
  • Riser caps — the same protective seal, plus a molded rope-tie loop, offered in trade sizes 1.5” through 6”. The loop lets you anchor a pull-line / mule tape inside the conduit so the pull string is staged and ready when the crew comes back to pull cable. Riser caps are the practical pick on stub-ups and risers where a pull line needs to live in the duct.

If you are not sure which style a run needs, a good rule of thumb is: seal-only runs take a plain end cap, while any conduit that should carry a staged pull line takes a riser cap.

Picking your cap

To choose a cap, confirm the trade size of your conduit, then decide whether you need a plain seal or a seal with a pull-line loop. Schedule and burial type (40, 80, EB, or DB) do not change the cap selection, because the cap fits by trade-size outside diameter.
