Riser Caps and Mule Tape: Seal a Conduit and Keep the Pull-Line

On an underground electrical or broadband job, the open end of a conduit has two needs at once: it has to be sealed so water and debris stay out, and it often has to keep a pull-line ready for the cable that gets pulled later. What a riser cap does
A riser cap is a high-impact PVC conduit cap with a molded rope-tie loop on its underside. It pushes onto the open end of a conduit and closes it off, exactly like a plain cap — but the loop lets you tie off a mule tape (also called pull-tape), a pull-line, or a pull string and leave it staged inside the conduit.

Why keep a pull-line in the conduit

Once a run is in the ground — especially a long or curved run — re-roping it later (re-installing a fresh pull-line) is slow, and it can fail outright when the rod or fish tape hangs up on a bend.
Tying off a mule tape to the riser cap’s loop avoids that problem. Mule tape is a flat, woven pull-tape with a rated tensile strength, and it commonly comes pre-lubricated so it runs cleanly through the duct. By leaving it anchored under the cap, the commissioning or cabling crew that returns weeks or months later finds a ready pull-line already in the conduit — no re-roping, no guesswork, just attach the cable and pull.
That small step at sealing time saves a disproportionate amount of effort at pull time.
Riser cap vs. end cap
The two cap styles look similar and seal the same way; the difference is the pull-line provision:
- Riser caps — seal the conduit and carry a rope-tie loop for tying off a mule tape or pull-line inside the duct. Use these wherever a staged pull-line should live in the conduit until the cable goes in.
- PVC end caps — the plain style. They simply seal a conduit opening against water and debris, with no provision for a pull-line. Use these on seal-only runs.
A simple rule of thumb: if the run only needs to be kept clean and dry, a plain end cap is enough; if the run should carry a staged pull string for a later pull, reach for a riser cap.
